Hyperbaric oxygen – a natural remedy without contraindications
Hyperbaric therapy is based on the use of pure (100%) oxygen supplied under increased pressure in a hyperbaric chamber. Along with food and water, oxygen is one of the key elements in the biochemical and physiological processes in the body. It enables optimal brain function and strengthens the body’s defense system. Normal air contains approximately 21% oxygen.
Under normal conditions, the concentration of oxygen dissolved in arterial blood depends on the oxygen content in the air. Only a small portion of oxygen (1–3%) is dissolved in the blood plasma; most (about 97%) is bound to hemoglobin in red blood cells.
Breathing pure oxygen under high pressure in a hyperbaric chamber significantly increases the concentration of oxygen dissolved in the plasma. The advantage of this form of oxygen is that it can reach tissues where red blood cells cannot penetrate due to their size.
This is especially important in cases where red blood cells or hemoglobin cannot effectively perform their function due to disease or injury – for example, carbon monoxide poisoning or severe blood loss.
In a healthy person, red blood cells are saturated with oxygen at normal pressure. However, when pressure increases in the hyperbaric chamber, oxygen dissolves additionally in the blood plasma and thus reaches damaged or diseased tissues more effectively, promoting their regeneration.
